THE SPARK IN OUR STEPS

For over 55 years, the Polish Dance Ensemble S.P.K. Iskry has entertained audiences near and far. “Iskry” translated from Polish means “sparks”, representing the energy and enthusiasm we ignite during performances. We pride ourselves in showcasing and preserving Polish culture through song and dance. Our ensemble boasts a growing and ever-changing repertoire of dances from various regions of Poland including the elegant Polonez, the dynamic Łowicz and the energetic Góralski. Each dance features vibrant, colourful costumes including unique and authentic elements such as floral textiles, embroidery, feathers, and metalwork.

Our ensemble consists of 45 members ranging in age from 17 to 38 and is made up of students, young professionals, and those with young families.  A number of our members have additional leadership roles within other Polish Organizations. We strive to preserve Polish culture and tradition and while not every member has been of Polish heritage, we all share a common love for dance and performance. We are a close-knit community and there is an incredible bond between members, past and present. We are proud to have members that are siblings, cousins; families who have danced for several generations; as well as many members who have formed strong, lifelong friendships. Our ensemble is also known to “spark” love, which has led to many happy marriages!

We are committed to community engagement. In addition to the many hours spent rehearsing, our members work equally hard in a variety of community initiatives. Our ensemble works collaboratively with other Polish organizations to keep our culture alive through volunteering and performances at commemorative events. We host zabawas and various fundraising events that bring people together. Our Ensemble has a longstanding tradition of travelling throughout the city to sing beautiful Polish Christmas Carols at residences and personal care homes. We also work to give back to the community through initiatives such as assembling Christmas hampers, donating to the local soup kitchen and raising funds for Ukrainian Humanitarian Aid.
